About
Kinship
 |
Kinship’s ministry had its informal origins with
a group of Luther Seminary students in St. Paul,
MN in 1952. Kinship began in 1954, and is a national
organization with 58 affiliates.
It was formalized by a cluster of Seminarians at
the Plymouth Youth Center, Plymouth, MN As the
“Kinsmen Outreach” To inner city youth.
The program is
supported by individuals, foundations,
corporations and churches.
“Kinswomen” was added in 1963 . Kinsmen
branched out nationwide in 1967 when the
American Lutheran Church Men’s board included
Kinsmen in its ministries. The “Kinship”
name was first used in 1969. During the
1970’s a National Director and Advisory Council
was formed and Kinship affiliates were
established from California to Virginia. The
majority were located in the Upper Midwest.
In 1982, the Richland-Wilkin Kinship Program
began and is now a national affiliate. |
 | Kinship is a Christian-based mentoring
program that matches children, aged 5-16, with
individuals, couples and families to spend time
together each week |
 | Children in the Kinship program are
voluntarily enrolled by a parent, guardian,
school counselor, or social worker. |
 | Kinship promotes long-term friendships while
encouraging low-cost or no-cost activities on
weekly outings. Kinship mentors volunteer
to spend time with their Kinship kid for at
least one year. |
 |
To date over 155 youth have been served through
the Richland-Wilkin Kinship Program. This
is made possible through the dedication of the
communities commitment to their youth. |
 | In the
spring of 2006 we became
